Kythnos is an island of Cyclades between Kea and Serifos ( Western Cyclades ) within 3 hours from Piraeus port and only 1 hour and 40 minutes from the port of Lavrio . It belongs to the South Aegean region and it is also called Thermia ( Thermia=hot ), at least since the 12th century. This name is due to the hot springs that exist to this day in the bay of Loutra .
Kythnos has wonderful beaches forming picturesque bays , coves with very clear water and trees on them for protection from the sun.
Antonides Beach
The most spectacular beach of the island is the Kolona beach (Column), in which a strip of sand separating the sea in the middle of two beaches on the same beach !
Kolona Beach
Even if it is very windy the days you are visiting the island, there are bays that you can swim like if your were in a pool. As shown in the photo below the waves are too many in the open sea, but in the bay is so calm as if it is not blowing at all.
Simousi Beach
There are so many beaches that even in the busiest month of the summer which is August, you will find quiet bays to swim and to rest, without the buzz of the organized beaches.
Antonides Beach
Of course there are also crowded beaches with beach bars and music ,sunbeds and water sports as the Episkopi and Apokrousi beach.
So if you visit for example Athens for a week, but you would like to visit also Cyclades island complex. Kythnos is a very good choice since it is very close to Athens and has exactly what Greece is wellknown around the world, the Cycladic landscape with the dry stones, the picturesque bays, the magnificent shores, the many white chapels and the beautiful villages.
